The Portland City Council has unanimously voted to sanction Russian officials in response to the country’s alleged poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter. The sanctions, which are mostly financial in nature, will target about 20 Russian officials and businessmen.
“This is a strong statement from our city that we will not stand for Russia’s reckless and heinous actions,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler.
The vote comes a little more than two weeks after the United Kingdom announced its own set of sanctions against Russia in response to the poisonings.
